Shopify Has No Birthday Field on the Customer Record — but It Does Have facts.birth_date, an anniversary() Segment Filter, and a Birthday Automation
The Customer object has no date-of-birth field, but Shopify ships a standard metafield definition named Birth date with the reserved key facts.birth_date, a customer segment function anniversary('metafields.facts.birth_date') that ignores the year, and a Celebrate customer birthday automation in Shopify Messaging. The native chain works end to end — storage, segment, send. What it does not solve is collection: Shopify Forms writes to a metafield you configure, the Plus-only Checkout Blocks Birthday template writes to an order metafield and, per Shopify's own note, does not apply it to the customer profile, and letting customers edit their own birth date in new customer accounts needs an extension or an app. Five real apps compared with USD pricing. Shopify blog tag pages: what the SEO apps can't reach, and why doing nothing is usually correct
The standard advice is to noindex your Shopify blog tag pages and strip them from your sitemap. Checked against current behavior, most of that advice does not apply: Dawn 16.0.0 and Horizon 4.1.5 emit no links to /tagged/ URLs at all, Shopify's auto-generated sitemap does not contain them, and canonical tags on both tag pages and paginated pages are already self-referencing, which matches Google's published pagination guidance. Across 13 SEO app listings checked on the Shopify App Store, none mention blog tag pages, /tagged/ URLs, or pagination, and none claim canonical control, because the seo.hidden metafield Shopify documents for third-party noindex apps only covers Products, Pages, and Blog posts. This article shows how to confirm whether you actually have the problem, why robots.txt.liquid rather than an app is the real lever, and where one line of Shopify's own help text blurs crawling and indexing. Shopify direct mail and postcard apps: the App Store price is not the price you pay
Six Shopify direct mail apps priced on incompatible denominators, normalized. Direct Mail Manager lists $0/$5/$10 per month on the App Store while its own pricing page shows $0 or $199 per month plus $0.686 to $0.873 per 4x6 postcard. PostPilot lists as free to install but charges $99 or $499 per month plus per-piece. Poplar Mail's App Store per-piece prices run 8 to 11 percent below its own page, and identity resolution is a separate line at $0.07 per match. Postage is stated as included by only three of the six. Shopify itself has no postal channel, no Flow mail action, and no ZIP code segment filter. Researched September 3, 2026.
Shopify marketing attribution apps vs. the built-in reports: what Shopify's default model actually is
Shopify's own help center names two different default attribution models: Last non-direct click for marketing activity data in Growth, and Last click in the Analytics report configuration panel. The lookback window is 30 days, and every built-in model is click-based, so an impression-heavy Meta campaign tends to look weaker in Shopify than in Ads Manager. This article quotes both passages and compares eight attribution apps on the unit each one bills against: orders, transactions, monthly tracked visitors, online GMV, yearly GMV, or a fixed feature tier. Includes a worked cost example for two stores of similar size. Researched September 3, 2026.
Shopify Stores One Consent State Per Channel, and Only Three Values Are Writable
Shopify's customer record holds one marketing consent state per channel — email, SMS, and now WhatsApp — and `customerEmailMarketingConsentUpdate` accepts only `SUBSCRIBED`, `UNSUBSCRIBED`, and `PENDING`. There is no native object for topics or frequency, `marketingUnsubscribeUrl` is documented as unsubscribing a member from all mailing lists, and the Shopify Messaging unsubscribe destination can't be modified to direct elsewhere. We could not identify a dedicated preference-center app in the Shopify App Store, so we compared five real listings — Shopify Messaging, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Attentive, and Postscript — on where the preference page lives and what actually writes back to Shopify. None of the vendors documents a topic-level preference change reaching Shopify's consent state. Researched September 3, 2026.
