Whether You Need a Shopify Color Swatch App Depends Entirely on Your Theme, Not on Shopify
Shopify has had native color swatches since Dawn v13.0.0 in January 2024, and they are better than the 'best Shopify swatch app' listicles admit — image and pattern swatches work, and Search & Discovery filter swatches work. The one thing that decides whether you need an app is whether your theme renders swatches on collection cards. Horizon 4.1.5 ships that block enabled by default; Dawn v16.0.0 contains zero swatch code in its product card. Stocky shut down on August 31, 2026, and most US search results still recommend it. Shopify's replacement is the Quick count POS UI extension, added on October 23, 2025, which lets staff update on-hand quantities from the Shopify POS app using a device camera, a paired barcode scanner, or manual entry. Two limits decide whether it is enough for you. First, Quick count is gated behind POS Pro at $89 USD/month per location, and that requirement appears only on Shopify's POS marketing pages — the three Help Center pages that document the feature never mention it, listing only the Manage inventory (excluding transfers) permission. Second, each session caps at 1,000 variants, so a 5,000-variant catalog needs five sessions. Shopify's own primary sources disagree on the unit: the changelog says products, two Help Center pages say variants, and the Stocky transition page says items.
